The Widow Mite

There is a minister who I (again I) so correct me if I am wrong, who I have never heard him speak on salvation, never, again, if he has, then forgive me, but I have never heard him.  Yet you can betcha last money (in my Don Cornelius voice)…he will speak on money. “MONEY COMTHE NOW”…..moving on.    Then there is another preacher who was born Michael Smith, but change his name to sound like money….you do the research.  What I am saying that in today church, the modern theology has replaced anointing with dollar bills.  Am I saying that the Lord wants you busted and disgusted, no, a thousand times no, but at the same time money does not mean good standing with God.  So many times I hear so many so called prosperity preachers call out an amount if you want to be blessed of the Lord, and Yes! There were times that the Lord did require a certain amount, as when the widow was told by Elijah to cook all of her meal in the barrel.   But more often than not, the Lord is looking at your heart and not your wallet, but in today church Jesus being reduced to a slot machine and not exalted as God, sadly the teaching of the widow mite has taken a back pew in the teachings of many churches today.

Now I understand that you give cheap, you will reap cheap, but at the same time a offering of 20.00 for one making minimal wage is not cheap, while it is for one that is a millionaire, and this what Jesus showed us in  Mark, the 12th chapter.  Now understand that is poor widow gave two mites, a mite is a coin current in Palestine in the time of our Lord. It seems in Palestine to have been the smallest piece of money (worth about one-fifth of a cent), being that it makes it a coin of very low value.   So in reality she gave less than a penny.  Could you imagine giving a penny in today’s prosperity church, when sometime offering sounds like an auction, and you got the nerve to give a penny, or less than a penny in there was such thing today society.   But after the big shots have given their money and she comes up with her two mites, look what the Jesus said, not the TV preacher, but the Lord.

  • 41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

Jesus looked more at the heart of the giver than the amount of the giver, how much is this taught in the churches of today.   The Apostle Paul teaches in 2nd Corinthians 8:12 “For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.  Again a biblical principal that is not taught today… can’t give what you don’t have, and I just don’t believe that the God I serve will cut you off from being bless because you cannot give in the 100 dollar money line. NOT MY JESUS.   For the mind to give is more important than the amount.

In closing, I know that God loves a cheerful giver, but if all you can afford is $5.00 and God knows that, then give just as cheerfully as the man giving $500.00.   I have a problem with so many preachers in my opinion selling the gospel to the highest bidder.  Offering a 7 set DVD on how to get out of poverty for 50 dollars for an example…..does that make sense to you.  I AM BROKE….I don’t have 50 dollars, so do one just stay broke, again, NOT MY JESUS.  I understand again that it does takes money to reproduce material and print it out, and ship it, but it just me, I am not too bright, so pay me no attention, but it seem that the struggling believer is left out though they give all of their living as did the widow.  But thanks be to God, the Lord didn’t leave her out and He won’t leave you out.
