The Expectation of the Tithe

There are many different views of paying tithes in today’s church, some say it’s an Old Testament teaching, not for the New Testament Church, some say it can be others than 10 percent of your money, while some hold to the faith that it is, like myself, who feel that it a biblical teaching for today and that it is Holy and belongs to God.  But understand, unless you are unemployed, your tithes is 10 percent of your earning.  Now if you are out of work, then you can tithe with your time and in other ways, but if you got a job, it’s the first fruit.

I understand and agree whole heartily that paying tithes is a faith walk, in today’s economy; ten percent of one income can be a lot.  In the small picture it can seem small to some, but  in the big picture, ten percent of a year salary can be quite a lot.  I mean of one makes $50,000 per year; you have just given $5,000 to God, yet putting in the hands of humans.  And we are just talking about tithes, not offerings, just tithes alone.  I don’t know about you, but there is a lot that I could do with that ten percent.   Before we get into the expectation, let us go to Malachi 3:10.

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Some say that I can give my tithes at other places, charities, people in need, or whatever, but what did the Word say….to bring ALL the tithes into the storehouse.   So what is the storehouse…?  The storehouse is where you are fed, in this case fed spiritually.  I am not saying that it is wrong to give to other ministries or charities, but your tithe, the 10 percent that belongs to your local church, the storehouse that feeds you.

Now this is the part that everyone looks to get rich over…….opening the windows of heaven, pouring out a blessing that you don’t’ have room enough to receive. I think the problem is here is our definition of the word blessing and what that blessing is and what it should be. In many minds I gave money, so I should receive money, but understand when you give your tithes, you didn’t give anything, because it wasn’t yours in the first place.  You give an offering, you bring a tithe, a tithe that is holy unto God, that is God and touch it not.  So the blessing of the tithe does not come with what you bring, but more on the obedience of that you brought.  Jesus said give and I’ll give it back to you; well this does not fit with tithes, because this was never yours or mines to bring.   So the pouring out the blessings from the windows of heaven, could mean money, but we limit the blessing if just think it to be a monetary blessing.   So what should our expectation should be in blessing of the tithe……the answer is found in verse 11:

And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, said the LORD of hosts.

So could it be that many are expecting the tithe to do what it was never attended to do….make us rich, give us more money, this is not the reason for the tithe. The tithe is to protect us with the favor of God the seed, the offering, so that devour won’t take it away.  Have you ever had something left over, had plans for it, and before you know it, something comes up and you have to used that money for something else.  Or it just seems that you thought you had more in the bank and it just disappears…..that is the devourer.   But when you pay out tithes, God pours out from the window of heaven, more favor, more covering, more anointing, to bless that offering (not the tithe, but because of the tithe) that you don’t have room to receive.  But if you don’t pay your tithes, then the devourer can have his way, because you are cursed with a cursed.

In closing, this not a blog to convince that tithe is a biblical principle, all I know it works for me.  Yes! Again, it’s a faith walk, sometime it can seem the more you give, the less you seem to get in return….believe me I understand.  But there is a blessing over your finance, believer or not, and I hear the Lord say…….prove me.   Remember your financial gains come from the offering; the tithe is to protect your returns….
